Smile - Togashi Saruko

Post by Canary » Tue May 19, 2020 8:36 am

Dragon lands, 3 years ago

It was peaceful. The sun was shining on a clear, crisp morning, making the icicles from the roof make dripping noises as the ice slowly began to melt. The Kami Togashi, and the very few who were his direct students had been up before dawn, honing their bodies in the chilly weather. And now they were all in meditation, sitting on the veranda outdoors as the slow drip-drip of the melting icicles provided a steady rhythm for the passing of time to match their breaths to.

At first, the student heard some quiet tap-tap sounds. Like the sound of bare feet across wooden floors. It was probably just one of the people working on all the construction going on, or perhaps it was the Dragon-man's wife, as she'd often join in on the training.

He was not prepared for a furry creature to suddenly launch itself onto his back, with leathery fingers gripping for a hold as a terrible shriek sounded just next to his ear. Startled, eyes were wide open to look straight into bright brown eyes surrounded by pink skin and light fur. Without thinking, the student elicited a cry of shock. The snow monkey cried back in response to the loud noise. A cry that was echoed by other monkeys that were following behind. Oh stars in Heaven, why was a family of monkeys here, on the veranda, and climbing the pillars and roof?

The other students were now also aware of what was happening, having been broken from their meditation by the ruckus. The previously serene moment had now been replaced with the chaos of hopeful students of the Kami trying to chase off monkeys, who in return were climbing on them and sneaking their grabby hands inside garments. Most of them couldn't hear the giddy laughter of a young woman in the din of cries and monkey-shrieks, which subsided as the students broke off to flee from the monkey-intruders. The monkeys elicited a few more loud shouts before calming down, and huddled together to share in the spoils of small morsels of food that had been found inside the clothes.

The Kami, finally breaking from his meditation, elicited a brief but rare smile as he sighed. "Saruko." Perhaps there was a hint of chiding in his tone as his wife walked over to his side, her bare feet make soft tapping sounds against the wooden floor. Her loose-fitting clothes swished across the floor as well as it draped off her figure to obscure it somewhat, even if the layers could no longer obscure her swollen belly, blessed as it was with their future.

"What?" she chuckled innocently, watching the nearby monkeys.
"They need to notice such small details as new pockets inside their sleeves that have aromatic fruit in them. Or keep their heads cool in such chaos," the Dragon's wife said with an amused laugh, even if she still managed to sound very convinced herself that she had done him a favor in helping out with her fellow students. "If they can't do either, then perhaps they still have ways to grow before they're ready."

"If they return." He remarked calmly.

"I'm sure they will. And if they don't, then they weren't ready to learn your ways, dear husband." She looked past him, standing up on the tip of her toes, as she caught a glance of one student sitting calmly and feeding a monkey with the fruit that had been tucked away into his clothes. A joyous smile found its way to her face. "But it seems you found someone who exceeded even my expectations. Always happy to help out."

Her husband's lips quirked in a brief smile once more. And seeing the smile always made it worth it for her to continue to do the unexpected.

"Is the dark side stronger?"
"No, no, no. Quicker. Easier. More seductive."
