[Seidou Haruyo]

Hauryo heard them enter through the entrance, neglecting to announce themselves until they sat down by her feet. They spoke of their hardships, their worries. She reassured them of everything that they feared and set them back on their path.

Haruyo listened as the woman told her about the difficulties of her new family. Each problem she brought up Haruyo offered an answer for, gave her assurance. Told her how to better direct her life. How to take control of it. That day the woman left with a heavy burden lifted from her shoulders.

Haruyo accepted no visitors that next day, they refused citing the need for her to focus on her health. She lay there attended by a few individuals for her needs.

Haruyo passed on and those who came seeking her advice daily mourned the loss of the source of their wisdom. They mourned the woman who had helped them in life even as she lay upon the cold and unforgiving ground.

Listening from above Haruyo heard as they moved on, how they discovered new lives and gained new senses of themselves.

They moved on and forgot her.

When the nightmares came, Miuna faced them bravely.

Her mind remained in control, thanks to the herbs they'd gathered and shared earlier that evening.

She stirred briefly from sleep. The warmth of her sister's sleeping form snuggled beside her lulled her into a deep, undisturbed slumber. Jigoku would not haunt her this night.

[Ko]

Shinsei's herbs tickled Ko's nose as she struggled to fall asleep. After two nights of unrestful sleep and a full day of hard marching, it should have been easy, but knowledge of what was waiting for her was twisting her gut into knots. Still, eventually, she could cling to wakefulness no longer.

She was on the dead beach again, sick and filthy. Something terrible was waiting at home, but she had to go back, had to save them--

No. She didn't, not like this. "It's a dream," her broken dream-voice whispered, and the gray sky cracked, whisker-thin lines of blue appearing.

"It's just a dream." This time her voice was healthy.

Ko dropped to her knees and dug up handfuls of the sucking, stinking mud, burrowing downward until she felt cool water welling around her questing fingertips. The water bubbled up and up, its clean salt smell filling her nose. The tide covered her knees, her waist, her chest. Wavelets rippled around her shoulders and lifted her hair like floating seaweed. Small fish came and swirled about, their silvery bodies brushing her hands and feet.

At last, the bright water came up over her head, softly covering her nose and eyes and lifting her body away from the muddy bottom. Ko floated off, weightless, into peaceful sleep.

But this night Jin was ready. His will was strong, his center was found, and pleasant, relaxing smoke filled his tent. They were but dreams and they held no power over him.

While Miyako can readily identify and obtain the necessary ingredients necessary to ward off her nightmares, actually doing so is way, way, way too much, the nightmares too horrifying for her to even stand up against that which she sees, and once more she tossed and turned throughout the night, the flashes of flaming forest filling her head...

Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: Absolute Critical Failure, My God...

[Togashi Nadare]

It was simple enough to find the right herbs to ward off nightmares even this far from the lands he knew. Nadare collected enough material to help another traveller should they wish it.

After smoking the leaves he could feel his inner reserves of strength renewed. The nightmares came, but they washed off him. It was merely unpleasant rather than terrifying.

He retained control of his dreams, jigoku could not take him. However, the process was so fascinating to him that he spent the night lost in contemplation of what had taken place.

[Yoshitsune Nori]

The kansen came to Yoshitsune Nori in his dreams that night.

A band of terrible ogres surrounded Nori, huge creatures wearing necklaces of human skulls. Their leader raised an enormous spiked club and said menacingly, “Now you die, Crab!”

Yoshitsune Nori seemed unperturbed by the threat, though it could have been the magic mushrooms he had consumed before bed. “You’re acting unreasonably,” the Crab scolded. “I bet you’re just hungry. Here, this will help.”

Nori stuffed a honeyed millet cake between the ogre leader’s slavering jaws. At the taste of cake, the ogre’s mouth formed a hideous, gap-toothed grin. Its spiked club began to sprout flowers. “Delicious~~!” the ogre groaned. All the ogres demanded honey cakes after that, and devoured them hungrily, each becoming friendly as it did so.

This won’t do at all, thought the kansen, and under its direction, the dreamscape changed. Suddenly the ogres had been transformed into the human members of the expedition. They all fell to the ground clutching their bellies and writhing in agony. “The cakes have gone bad. You’ve poisoned us all!” the stricken people cried out.

“What! Impossible!” Nori exclaimed. The shugenja bent his head in momentary prayer, and suddenly there was a great commotion as a giant crab scuttled over the horizon. The crab was the size of a house, and striped with all the colors of the rainbow, and its eyes were so large as to be adorably kawaii (for a crustacean). It made a loud clickety-clacking noise as it scuttled toward Nori, and in one great claw it bore a jug of medicine, which greatly resembled the grain alcohol sold by the Pure River Brewery.

“Your medicine, honored one,” said the giant crab in a musical soprano identical to the voice of Nori’s first adolescent crush. Nori took a great big swig from the medicine/whiskey before administering the contents to each of the fallen expedition members. Each one recovered immediately, and each in turn sat up and exclaimed “Delicious~!”

Once the last one was cured, the sun emerged from behind a cloud and everyone began to dance….

This is hopeless, the kansen thought, and fled Yoshitsune Nori’s dreams, vowing not to return any time soon.

[Ongaku no Ryoko]

As Ryoko lay down to sleep, her mind was awash with anxieties, fears... confusion.

The herbs she was offered helped her calm her fears, but they could not give her mind peace.

Her nightmares now grew worse, for now, among the bodies, lying against the pile, face smashed by a horrible blow, was Yamadono. Against her will, she felt herself walk to him, and as the fake mother leapt from the heap, she did not bring a baby anymore, but Matsu.

Screaming inside, where none could hear, crying and begging, Ryoko watched herself murder the girl with her own hands... again.... and again.

Haka's dreams were filled with strange sounds and unpleasant smells. More than once, she felt something slimy wrap around her legs and try to pull her off for reasons that were best not to dwell upon. Though disturbing, the dreams really weren't all that bad for someone who had long ago made peace with the unknown dangers and constant fear of living in an unseen world of hungry ghosts. Haka woke up briefly, grumbled something incoherent, and then rolled over and went back to sleep.
