Chiyo Family: +1 Reflexes
Founded by a bushi and shugenja couple who became friends and confidants of Shiba, the members of the Chiyo family are united in purpose and philosophy despite their different styles of training. While the Jiyo protect the Emperor’s body and the Yuzuru counsel peace and unity in his courts, a Chiyo samurai’s duty is to nurture the Imperial Families’ connection with all of Rokugan, from the land itself on up. Chiyo priests are often found tending shrines in the new Imperial Capital, but many members of the family also travel extensively, visiting remote shrines and villages and collecting information about regional conditions, natural disasters and fortuitous occurrences, and the mood of local nature spirits. If a province is suffering from bandits or famine, expect a Chiyo scout to arrive to gather the news--or a Chiyo shugenja to enlist the help of the local kami. Although it may be many years until Shiba’s Empire has a formal place for “magistrates,” some Chiyo samurai are also called upon to investigate and arbitrate problems in the course of their travels.

Recent historical details (probably still relevant to PCs in Dawn 3, less so a few more decades on): Besides his consort-to-be Yuzuru, two other Ayakashi tribesfolk followed Shiba in the wake of the Tournament of the Kami: Tsubo, a kind and practical woodsman, and Karanoko, a spiritually enlightened mystic and weaver. During the early years of Shiba’s reign, Karanoko and Tsubo supplied support and counsel to the growing Imperial household, encouraging Shiba to ground himself in the physical and spiritual landscape of the Protected Lands that would be Rokugan. The informal group of shugenja, scouts, and emissaries that formed around the pair was eventually organized as a Family under the leadership of their eldest daughter Chiyo, born in the same year the Kami fell to earth. Chiyo became a precocious shugenja under her mother’s tutelage, while her younger sister Niko, who was only a little older than the Emperor’s eldest child, learned the ways of the land and self-defense from their father.

Jiyo Family: +1 Stamina
The Jiyo family are the foremost unit of personal bodyguards for the most valuable members of the Empire. Jiyo, the family's founder became the Empire's first Emerald Champion and protector of Shiba I. She provided the first generation of heirs for each of the Imperial families; who consequently all trace their bloodlines back through her. The Jiyo stand at the side of the Imperial families as paragons of Honor, Courage, and Duty; willing to sacrifice all for the safety and well-being of their charges.

Shiba Family: +1 Void
The Imperial Family. The blessings of Heaven hive them a particular sort of enlightenment and connection with the Void that has influenced its members approach to their duties. Its scions have the love of learning and philosophy of their founder.

Yuzuru Family, +1 Awareness
The early followers and scions of Yuzuru were a disparate bunch of shugenja and mystics that either shared the Imperial Consort's worldview or wished to build and protect the nascent Imperial family. They all had to pass the scrutiny of the Emperor, the Consort himself, and the Consort's Kitsune companion, Han-Han.

As the family solidified they became the spiritual centre of the Imperial Court. Yuzuru's open nature spread through the family, making them more likely to talk things out than resort to violence.

The Yuzuru mon is a nine-tailed fox wreathed in flame.

Technique - Speaking With The Land
You may Commune with the kami of the dominant element in your current location to make yourself a welcome visitor in the area. This ordinarily requires a ritual lasting at least 10 minutes, often involving a small offering of food or flowers. The difficulty of the spellcasting roll is as normal for the Commune spell. (During this ritual, you should not expect the kami to answer your questions as if this were a normal casting of the Commune spell—though they might be curious about you, or volunteer information about their own concerns.) If the ritual is successful, you gain the Way of the Land advantage for the province you currently occupy; in addition, any time you use the Commune spell to speak with the local kami in this province, you gain a Free Raise which may be used to entreat the kami to answer more clearly or grant you an additional question. These effects last for a number of days equal to your Insight Rank.
You also gain a Free Raise on any spell cast using one of your Void spell slots.

Yuzuru Shugenja School

Technique - One Light in the Darkness
Yuzuru was a Seer, blinded by his otherworldly sight, yet he still became one of the founders of the Courtly Way. Those that followed him did not necessarily share the blindness but they learnt his ways of using Sight in social settings. A Yuzuru Shugenja may enact a Divination ritual each day. This takes thirty minutes to complete and requires the expenditure of 1 Void Point. For the rest of the day the Yuzuru Shugenja may add a bonus equal to their ranks in the Divination Skill to any Social Roll for a number of rolls equal to their School Rank. Yuzuru Shugenja receive a Free Raise on any spell with the Divination keyword.

Technique: Listening to the Land - Although they do not possess an ability to speak to the kami, the Chiyo Waywatchers are at home in the wilderness like few others in the Empire. While in a rural environment, you gain a Free Raise on all Hunting Skill Rolls and Athletics Skill Rolls; you also gain a bonus of +2k0 on any Contested Roll you make to detect a hidden opponent.

Jiyo Selfless Guard

Replaces: Jiyo Bushi 2
Special: Can be taken as a rank 2 technique by any Bushi with an Imperial Yojimbo Appointment.

Technique: Selfless Guard - The Selfless Guard follow the example of their founder, Jiyo, to provide their sacred charges with enough time to survive any skirmish through a combination of aggressive and defensive techniques. When in a skirmish with a friendly Imperial or Shugenja personage, you gain +1k0 on all attacks. Additionally, you may add +1k1 to the Armor TN of a person you are defending with the Guard Action (in addition to the normal bonus to TN). You make this determination at the start of your Turn during each Round of the skirmish.

Yuzuru Nature Warden

Requirement: Touched by Chikushudo or Touched by Sakkaku. Animal Handling 2

Technique: Yuzuru's Legacy - The first Imperial Consort's love of nature and wildlife was well known. His series of fox companions through his life were just one aspect of this. Nature Wardens take this as their inspiration and study the animals of the realms closely, both to understand and protect. This study is applied to the realms of Ningen-do, Chikushudo and Sakkaku. Nature Wardens gain a free raise on any spell targeting an animal or animal Spirit that does not do damage. This does not apply to animalistic Oni and the like. Also any denizen of Chikushudo or Sakkaku will look favourably on a Nature Warden and will always be friendly unless provoked.

Ryoshun Family: +1 Void
By its very nature, the Ryoshun family is one of power and mystery. Formed by the union of a dead Kami and one so strong in the Void, the bloodline was destined to have strong mystical influence. Ryoshun Seido itself imbues many Ryoshun with a sense of destiny and otherworldly power. The craftsmen of the family feel as if Ryoshun’s spirit is guiding their work. The Mystics and Spirit Guides feel much the same.

Requirements: All students of the Ryoshun Mystic School must possess the Ishiken-Do Advantage.
Affinity/Deficiency: None. You cannot cast spells of the four non-Void Elements except for the basic spells of Sense, Commune, and Summon, and you cannot Importune for spells.

Technique - The Void's Caress
Those born with a close attunement to the Void are sought out by the Mystics of the Bat Clan, to help them refine their abilities. You do not require spell-scrolls. You may cast any Void spell up to your current Mastery Level, expending a Spell Slot as normal. Mechanically, the spell is cast as normal, but you do not need to speak aloud to cast your spells. You may only cast each Spell once per day, and you may never cast Void spells above Rank 5. You also gain a Free Raise to the Divination Skill (a by-product of your attunement to the Void).
Spells: As noted above, you may cast any Void Spell within your Mastery Level. Additionally, the Mystic may be granted one additional Spell Slot for each School Rank he attains.

Bat Spirit Guide

Technique: Spirit of the Bat - Using the Void you may cast Sense or Commune to detect or communicate with any spirits of the dead that have lingered in or returned to the Mortal Realm. You gain a Free Raise on any roll involving such spirits.

Anjing was as stubborn as her husband, Hida, was powerful, a bulwark of personality that complimented her husband's focus on defense. Those who follow her respect her strength and emulate her approach to confrontations - direct and strong.

Those who follow Kami Hida are among the largest and most powerful people in all the Empire. They take the idea of defense seriously, and they are both incredible warriors and skilled defensive tacticians.

Yoshitsune and his followers were charged with protecting merchant caravans from bandits, safely escorting them to the new home of the Crab Clan.

You gain +2k0 to stealth rolls. You gain additional Wounds per Wound Rank equal to your agility. You may also add your agility to the total of all damage rolls resulting from melee attacks. (This technique replaces Forest Killer Path's Strength of the Forest)

Rank 2: Strike a Mountain, Fight an Avalanche
You gain Reduction equal to your Fire Ring the first time you enter Full Attack Stance during a skirmish. While in the Full Attack Stance, your Reduction is increased by 1. Your Reduction returns to normal at the end of the skirmish where it increased.

Rank 3: Pound, Always
You may make attacks as a Simple Action instead of a Complex Action while using Heavy Weapons or Weapons with the Samurai keyword.

Rank 4: The Mountain Moves
While in the Full Attack Stance, you gain a Free Raise for all Attack Rolls made with a Heavy Weapon. Additionally, while in the Full Attack Stance, the TN penalties you suffer from Wound Ranks are reduced by your Insight Rank.

Rank 5: Strike So You Will Not Be Struck
The bonus to Armor TN from any armor you wear is increased by your Stamina. Once per round, you may make an attack as a Complex Action at the cost of a Void Point. If successful, you may add +5k0 to the Damage Roll.

The followers of Doji are bound together by an interest in both art and politics, and are bound to have a strong influence on both in the Empire, held back only by the influence of the Imperial consort. Still, they are already influential in forming the basic underpinnings of aesthetics and etiquette, weaving their approach into the fabric of culture itself.

Nanzi Family: +1 Agility
“Our blades defend the clan; never shall they be raised against it.”
Literal cousins to the Doji family, founded by her husband, Nanzi, the premier bushi family of the Crane always stands by the Doji. Good natured and professing peaceful resolution with a hand on their blades. A secretive family they have sworn themselves as the defenders of the Doji and given the founder's oath to Hantei they will never raise a blade against the children of Doji or the clan. To this end they never marry out, always in and if one truly wishes to leave the family, they are made ronin to seek their own path.

The Nanzi family prefers hit and run tactics and fighting with small elite forces when pressed into warfare. Some may even consider their actions less than honorable but thankfully they have the Doji to smooth over such obvious misunderstandings. In court they serve as yojimbo and aggressive diplomats, they are the firm hand to the honorable and more genteel Doji diplomats providing their cousins with Mastery of the Duel to turn aggressive negotiations to their favor.
