As for they 'why' I definitely think it is proximity or the fact that this place is 'thinner' in regards to the spirit realms. Hantei got his glow, Reiko was busy in communion, and Nanzi has his new 'friend' but everyone else was impacted.

I don't think it's Taint or Jigoku, since Rat-Rat's are affected.

Rats are immune to taint, not sure they're immune to Jigoku - and as this is dreams, if Jigoku is affecting Yume-do then I don't see a reason for Jigoku to not affect rat dreams. At least I think?

Nezumi might not be subject to the realm "control" of Jigoku, but they're certainly vulnerable to Jigoku in other ways... oni can still chomp on them, hellpits can still swallow them, they still see/hear/smell scary things, maho spells still work on them (once those exist), whatever. I'd totally buy nightmares as a plain old environmental effect rather than specifically a "corruption" that they'd be immune to.

I think Yume-do is one of the realms that are very far removed from Jigoku/resistant to Jigoku's influence (and that of other realms too), so my theory is that something else is afoot.

At work now though so I can't check my books.

I know it's the wiki and not the books, but the only realm far from Yume-Do (according to the wiki) is Toshigoku, and Jigoku has invaded Yume-do many times. You can't be tainted, but nightmares always followed the attacks. So it kinda fits

Yep. Toshigoku is 'far' because slaughter spirits don't get to sleep. They fight, they die, they fight again - but no nap time. Yume-do's thing is that it's easy to come and go but you, normally, can't really change things or take things with you. So Jigoku can invade and create nightmares - but it can't taint you through them.

Yeah, Yume-Do is a place that Jigoku tries to take over countless times, but as the Tsuno learned centuries ago, it is damnably impossible to ever lay hold of the realm entirely. It morphs too much and defies true control. So it just ends up being horrible nightmares...

And a Thousand Years of Darkness because some asshole had a good night's sleep one night.

Cause I have a thread that could go from "Ayumu is silly" to "maybe Ayumu is not that silly" depending of the answer.
