Did Plan A for Mai get derailed in some fashion?

Whatever do you mean...
Originally, I intended for her to stay within the Bat in the long run. After several threads, the romance that was forming was really cute, as well as several good interactions with other members of the Spider clan. Then for a bit I thought she may just try to secure good relations between the two Clans. Though, as time passed that thought changed, as well.
The Spider really accepted her despite her faults. Early threads with Mai, I mentioned she was just with the Bat as she was able to work in a way she was useful. She wasn't supposed to be particularly liked within her own clan, so this worked out well.
